Print Competition

By | 10th November 2022

We were very pleased to welcome back our judge for the evening, Malcolm Bull from Steyning Camera Club. Malcolm has a wide and varied interest in photography and photographs whatever ‘catches his eye’, however he particularly enjoys shooting live events of all kinds. He is a well known judge, not only to our club, but judges at other local camera clubs, and he always gives great feedback and suggestions on how to enhance our photography skills.

This was our first print competition held at our hall since 2019, and we had 17 members who ventured out on such a wet and windy evening – reminiscence of ‘the old days’.This was an ‘open’ competition whereby images are judged as a whole group, rather than in the beginners, intermediate or advanced groups. Malcolm commented on how lovely it was to see prints again, and everyone agreed that these are, indeed, special events.

We had 26 entries in total varying from landscapes, close-up, birds, flora and fauna, and psychedelic images and Malcolm commented on the diverse range that had been submitted. In conjunction with this meeting there was also a parallel zoom session with 7 members in attendance whereby Mike very kindly showed the images in the same order, and Kevin, based in the hall, sent through the scores for each image following the judges comments. This worked extremely well and the zoom members were able to compare their scoring of each image with that of the judge, which was very much enjoyed.

Following a comprehensive and enjoyable judging session Malcolm held 6 images back for further critique, and selected two favourites images. His best of the evening went to John Nalaskowski for ‘Colourful Soap Film’, with Mike Doyle a close second with ‘Eye on the Prize’. We continued to discuss the 6 held images, and each member explained the techniques used, locations of each image, and why they had taken them. The top two images were:

The best of the evening: John Nalaskowski – ‘Colourful Soap Film’

The runner-up: Mike Doyle – ‘Eye on the Prize’

Our grateful thanks go to Malcolm for a very enjoyable and informative judging session, as well as Kathie, Kevin, Rob, John and Mike, and to those who helped to set up and clear away. Special thanks go to Jan and Liz for stepping in to help the Committee on the night. We would also like to thank our members for submitting some super images and for continuing to support our lovely club.
