Cherry gave us an inspirational talk about her love for Abstract photography and how it can make us question what we see. Throughout this talk, Cherry referred us to her artistic inspiration, Paul Klee (1879–1940).

Cherry pointed out that abstracts are all around us and we need to develop our eyes to see them. Rather than see individual things to take pictures of, we can get closer and seek out lines, shapes, colours, textures as images.

Cherry’s process begins with taking photos of items in her surrounding and she demonstrated this by first showing some unpromising subjects, then the images of interesting components and finally the manipulation in Photoshop, using a combination of rotating and blend modes.  Cherry also advocated experimenting with changing colours.

Cherry promoted sharing one’s own work with Family and Friends, through the use of gift, birthday and Christmas cards. Cherry uses Cornish printers SixPrint for her cards.

Cherry also brought along some of her own prints and recommended a Smartphone accessory to make taking photos easier. Images of these items are included here for those unable to make the talk in person.

A thoroughly enjoyable talk and it generated a lot of talk during and after the presentation.
