Last night, we entered the world of multiple exposure with the brilliant Janina Wilde. Specifically tailored for beginners, Janina’s talk was a masterclass in seeing the world in layers, neatly split into two practical halves that balanced immediate results with digital control.
The first half focused on In-Camera Multiple exposures. Janina explained how to combine images in real-time. Using in camera blend modes, where available. With different techniques to try: “in and out of focus”; “different apertures”; 180 (i.e. flip the camera); composing and recomposing people to fill the frame.
The second half shifted to Out-of-Camera Creativity. Here we moved into the digital darkroom, exploring how to combine separate images using tools like Snapseed, Photoshop, and Affinity. Janina demonstrated that the creative process doesn’t have to end when the shutter clicks; through blend modes and the use of textures, we can weave disparate moments into a single, cohesive story. Janina demonstrated her version of the Ventosa technique., creating an image “in the round”.
