On Tuesday evening, we welcomed local photographer Paul Kemp to Worthing Camera Club for a fascinating look at his ongoing project, “A Portrait of Worthing”.
Paul began by sharing his journey into photography, through his evolution in cameras, education and photography, before taking us behind the scenes of his Worthing project.
Paul is interested in much more than simply photographing the familiar landmarks of our town. Using both analogue and digital photography, he is documenting Worthing’s people, streets, history and everyday life – looking for the details and stories that can easily be overlooked.
One of the key messages from the evening was the power of photographic projects. Rather than simply looking for individual “good pictures”, having a project can give our photography a sense of purpose. It encourages us to look more closely, return to a subject and gradually build a body of work.
Paul also shared his enthusiasm for printing, zines and exhibitions, reminding us that photographs don’t have to remain on our computers or phones. Bringing a collection of images together in print can give them a completely different life and help tell a much bigger story.
It was an inspiring evening and a great reminder that photography can be about much more than taking a single photograph. Sometimes it’s about exploring, observing, connecting and telling a story over time.
