PDI Merit Competition – Judge Jack Taylor DPAGB EFIAP
We were very pleased to welcome Jack Taylor to judge our 2nd PDI Merit competition of the season. Jack is a member of Hailsham Photographic Society and an accredited Southern Photographic Federation Judge. Jack began the session explaining that he had alredy received our competition entries, so I had had a little time to consider his feedback. Further, that more constructive criticism would be given to beginners, with decreasing levels of feedback for Intermediate and Advanced entries.
As this was a Merit competition the images were submitted under three categories: Beginners, Intermediate and Advanced. We had a total of 81 entries for the competition: 28 Beginners; 35 Intermediate; and 18 Advanced. We had 33 attendees in total, including Jack. There was a great collection of fine images submitted for critique and scoring and it was noticeable how strong the entries from each class is getting. Jack gave some feedback for each image and gave hints and tips throughout the evening. These included ensuring that distraction were removed (by moving or in post), also a number of images had bright skies, which could be darkened with the use of graduated filters.
Following the judging, Jack selected his finalists in each category (those held back) and from them the Winner of each Group (see below). His ‘Best in Competition’ went to Kevin Hobbs with ‘Under the Arches’. Again, another long evening, but Jack ensured everyone received some constructive feedback and having said “thank you” we closed a successful second competition meeting.
The winners from each group category were:
Beginners – Peter Horsfield “City view with Sky Garden reflection”;
Intermediate – Kevin Hobbs “Under the Arches”; and
Advanced – Mike Doyle “Catch of the day”
