For the 2nd time this season, Tony North spoke to us, this time exploring his approach to urban photography and creative options. The presentation combined examples of traditional cityscapes with more experimental work, particularly multiple exposures and intentional camera movement (ICM).
Tony began with an introduction to his background and the equipment he typically uses for his work. He then moved on to a series of urban landscape images taken in a range of locations. These images included classic cityscapes, night photography and elements of street photography.
Throughout the talk Tony shared lots of practical tips and techniques, as well as anecdotes about the locations and experiences involved in capturing the images. He also discussed artistic influences on his work, including photographers Lam Makmak, Sandra Bartocha and Pep Ventosa.
Several broader creative themes were explored, including how to decide whether an image works better in colour or monochrome, and when the inclusion of people can add interest or narrative to urban scenes.
The talk concluded with a live demonstration showing how Tony constructs one of his urban images, illustrating the process behind his creative approach.
Members really enjoyed all that Tony shared and the insights into his creative techniques.
