Ronald Cain Competition

By | 14th November 2019

This was held on Tuesday 12th November and judged by Colin Howard, the nephew of Ronald Cain. Colin kindly donated this trophy to our club and travelled down from Norfolk to judge the competition.  The theme for this was’ In and Around Worthing’ and it was wonderful to celebrate our home town with many glorious digital images.

Ronald Cain lived in Goring and was a very keen photographer and Colin, who has written and compiled several books already, is planning to compile a book of Ronald’s old photographs of Worthing, which will be a lovely record of our town. Colin had no idea that his uncle was such a keen photographer and was delighted to find his collections at his home when he went to clear out his house.

Colin feels that photography is definitely in his blood as he is a published photographer himself, having taken photographs since the age of eight years when he was given a Box Brownie by his parents. Very soon he started processing his prints in the bathroom, which then developed into a love of his darkroom. Although having a background of using a roll film camera, he has been working in digital photography for a number of years, but does admit to taking one month out of twelve to return to the use of film. Members and visitors were given a very entertaining evening by Colin, who not only gave informative and interesting critique to all of the PDI images but encouraged the photographer to enhance their skills in various ways. He also gave anecdotal stories of his own photographic journey and passed on techniques and skills, which were most welcome. Colin also commented that the standard of entries this year had greatly improved over the last two years, which was testament to the commitment of the club in helping members to develop their skills and improve their images.

The winner of the salver was Mike Gibbons with ‘Reflecting on the Pantone Panes’.

The runner’s up were:

Jan Budgen with ‘Fireworks on Worthing Pier’

Mike Ghibaldan with ‘Fire Duty’

Very well done to the above members, and grateful thanks to everyone who contributed to a very enjoyable evening. The full results list can be found on the Competition/Results page.
