Competition – PDI Set Subject – “Golden Hour”

16 March 2027 @ 7:30 pm - 9:30 pm

Golden Hour Photography Ideas

Golden hour offers warm, directional light, long shadows, and rich colour, making it one of the most rewarding times to photograph.

Landscapes

  • Shoot towards the light for dramatic sun rays and silhouettes.
  • Use side lighting to reveal texture in hills, rocks, trees, and fields.
  • Look for reflections in lakes, rivers, puddles, or wet sand.
  • Capture the transition between light and shadow across the landscape.

Portraits

  • Position subjects with the sun behind them to create beautiful rim lighting.
  • Focus on natural, candid moments rather than formal poses.
  • Use a wide aperture to create a soft, atmospheric background.
  • Include the environment to tell a story about the subject.

Silhouettes

  • Expose for the bright sky and allow subjects to become dark shapes.
  • Look for strong, recognisable outlines.
  • Experiment with people, trees, bicycles, buildings, and wildlife.
  • Use negative space to create simple, powerful compositions.

Street and Urban Photography

  • Use long shadows as leading lines and graphic elements.
  • Photograph warm light reflecting from windows and buildings.
  • Look for contrasts between sunlit and shaded areas.
  • Capture people moving through shafts of light.

Nature and Details

  • Photograph flowers, grasses, and leaves illuminated from behind.
  • Look for dew, spider webs, and seeds catching the light.
  • Capture the glow of translucent petals and foliage.
  • Focus on small details often overlooked during the day.

Creative Projects

  • Make shadows the main subject.
  • Experiment with lens flare and shooting into the sun.
  • Frame subjects through foliage, windows, gates, or other foreground elements.
  • Revisit familiar locations and photograph how the changing light transforms them.

Magic in the Mundane
Golden hour is perfect for discovering beauty in ordinary subjects:

  • Bus stops
  • Empty benches
  • Garden sheds
  • Laundry on a line
  • Bicycles
  • Doorways and gates
  • Puddles and reflections
  • Everyday people going about their lives

Rather than searching for spectacular subjects, challenge yourself to notice how extraordinary light transforms familiar scenes. Golden hour is an invitation to slow down, observe more deeply, and rediscover the joy of seeing.
