Speaker – Imaging reality – a history of documentary and street photography (Thomas Peck)
25 February 2025 @ 7:30 pm - 10:00 pm
Tom has been taking photographs for many years now and originally focused mostly on macro photography of flowers, and then expanded to include landscape, architecture and portraits.
He shoots with a Sony & Leica cameras, and also his Smartphone. He feels that “the real pleasure of photography is that it forces one to slow down and really look. That’s never easy in our rushed world, so a chance to stop, look and see is truly valuable.”
In this talk Tom asks:
Images show what has happened, don’t they? They depict reality, they are ‘proof’. Documentary photography gives insight into events and street photography allows us to glimpse other people’s behaviour.
This talk will take us through the history of documentary/street photography using well known photographs liberally mixed with the author’s own photography. We will ask the question: is what we see in the photographs actually reality? Can we trust these ‘documentary’ photographs?
