SUMMARY:Speaker - Paul David Kemp "A Portrait of Worthing"
DESCRIPTION:What truly defines a town? Is it the architecture or the people who walk its streets? In this talk\, local photographer Paul David Kemp shares his ongoing project “A Portrait of Worthing”. Documenting the “intricate tapestry” of our town. \nDrawing inspiration from the great humanist traditions of Walker Evans and the Mass Observation Project\, Paul uses both analogue and digital photography to unveil the layers of Worthing’s history\, culture\, and contemporary challenges. For Paul\, this project is more than just documentation; it is a personal search for belonging. By retracing generational roots that stretch back to the 1940s\, he uses his lens to bridge the gap between his family’s past and his new home. \nJoin us to see how Paul shines a light on the subtle nuances of our town\, turning the ordinary into the extraordinary. \nNon-members are welcome to join us. SUMMARY:Speaker - JJ Waller "Street Photography"
DESCRIPTION:Known for his “beyond-the-postcard” depictions of British life\, Waller’s work is a vibrant\, often humorous\, and deeply human exploration of the people and places that define our coastal towns. \nJJ Waller is a British photographer who has made street photographs of Brighton\, his home town\, and other seaside towns. He is best known for his portraits of people in Brighton during the 2020 Covid-19 lockdown – making around 100 informal portraits of people isolated in their homes during the period. \nWaller’s path to photography has been anything but conventional. A former Covent Garden street entertainer and “Unusualist\,” he brings a performer’s eye for timing and absurdity to his editorial work. During this talk\, JJ will share insights into his diverse projects\, from his iconic Lockdown Portraits (edited by Martin Parr)\, which captured the intimacy of life behind glass\, to his long-term documentation of Brighton\, Blackpool\, and Benidorm. \nRecently he collaborated with Martin Parr\, to produce “Beside the Sea\,” a world-first exhibition staged on the roofs of Brighton’s bus shelters\, designed to be viewed exclusively from the top deck of a bus. \nNon-members are welcome to join us. Click here to obtain tickets. \n\nTo see more of JJ Waller’s work check out his website here. \nFollow him on Instagram here \nor on Facebook here

SUMMARY:Speaker - Gerry Coe "Mobile Art"
DESCRIPTION:With a professional career spanning nearly 60 years\, Gerry Coe has witnessed the radical evolution of photography firsthand. Starting his journey at 15 in Belfast’s Jaymar Studio\, he eventually mastered everything from commercial and industrial work to aerial and architectural photography. Throughout his career\, Gerry has operated at the highest level of the craft\, earning prestigious Fellowships from the RPS\, MPA\, SWPP\, and BIPP\, and becoming the first person in history to win the Peter Grugeon Award twice. \nIn this talk\, Gerry explores his transition from the meticulous world of 10×8 large format cameras to the modern frontier of smartphone photography. He challenges the notion that professional art requires heavy\, traditional equipment\, drawing on his experience as the first photographer to be awarded a Fellowship for a panel of images captured entirely on an iPhone. \nProving that vision always precedes the tool\, Gerry will demonstrate that the “best camera” is a matter of perspective\, not just hardware. This session is an invitation to see the world through a new lens and discover the untapped artistic potential of the device in your pocket. \nNon-members are welcome to join us for this talk. Tickets are available here. \nTo see more of Gerry’s work visit his website: iphone-art.uk/work \nFollow him on Instagram: @coeiphoneart \nAnd on Facebook here

SUMMARY:Speaker – Ken Scott ARPS APAGB MBPsS “The Joy of Seeing”
DESCRIPTION:Photography IS all about seeing. \nMost of us go through everyday life not noticing very much at all. Our minds are tuned this way: to notice novelty at the expense of the familar; to make conscious what is important for survival; to filter out based on our likes and dislikes and values. We also tend to get stuck with concerns of past or future and are distracted from the present moment\, which is all there is. \nIn the talk\, Ken provides strategies for suspending judgement\, for identifying and clearing ‘Barriers to Seeing’\, so that we can see more freely and expansively\, appreciate the world with fresh eyes\, find the ‘Magic in the Mundane‘. \nThis is about ‘Redisovering the Joy of Seeing‘ \nNon-members are able to join us for this talk. Tickets are available here. \nCheck out more of Ken’s work: touchingthelight.co.uk \nAnd follow him on Flickr: touchingthelight
