First PDI Merit Competition – Judge: Rob de Ruiter

This was the first Merit Competition held via Zoom with an external judge, and despite the obvious trepidation of going into unknown territory the evening was a fabulous success. It was fantastic to see so many beautiful images from our members in the comfort of our own homes, and the opportunity of seeing the images on our own computer screens gave us the added advantage of being more ‘up close and personal’ with each one. The judging was very comprehensive and Rob took time over each image, giving his expertise and advice on how we could improve our techniques. His comments included subjects as depth of field, the use of flash, contrast and shadows, placement of subject, HDR, etc. etc. I am sure our members will take away his invaluable advice and use it to enhance their own techniques as they progress their photography. Thank you Rob for making our evening such a great success.

After much deliberation and some very close marking Rob’s ‘Best of the Evening’ went to Mike Doyle for ‘Common Crane’. The winners from each group category are as follows:

Beginners:  Jan Budgen – ‘Misty Morning’

Intermediate:  John Nalaskowski – ‘Monarch Butterfly’

Advanced: Mike Doyle – ‘Common Crane’

Thanks must also go to Kathie for arranging the meeting, as well as Rob, Vince, and Liz for all the ‘behind the scenes’ work, as well as hosting and ensuring the evening was successful. Feedback from members has been very welcome and encouraging, thank you, and this will undoubtedly be the first of more Zoom competitions.
